Description

Goldring Ethos

Ethos is a truly high-end cartridge featuring a vital-shank, nude-diamond stylus. This polyhedral, line-contact profile was chosen because it has a very low tip-mass and a large contact area whilst being very narrow from front to back; even enabling the undistorted retrieval of ultrasonic frequencies in a recording. In order to properly process this information, at the heart of the Ethos cartridge is Goldring’s hand-built GOL-1 moving-coil generator. Featuring a hand-wound cross-shaped, soft-iron armature and married to a low resonance aircraft aluminium chassis, each one is precision tuned by our expert craftsmen to achieve our best ever level of performance. The result is that one becomes simply immersed in the musical experience …and that’s our whole Ethos.

Ethos Cuttrhough

spec

Line-Contact Stylus

The line-contact diamond profile provides a large contact area with the groove wall, improving the retrieval of high frequency detail and reducing groove wear. Its vital-shaped shank has a low tip mass giving the design exceptionally good trackability.

spec

Alloy Cantilever

The stiff and lightweight alloy cantilever tube has been tuned to the ideal length for cartridge stability and ride height. Its length has been optimised to reduce inertia in the suspension system and improve trackability.

spec

Cross-Shaped Armature

The coils are wound around a cross-shaped armature of pure, high-permeability, Swedish iron. The reduced unsprung mass improves the ability for the stylus to track the groove wall and the coil separation minimises cross-talk, improving the stereo image.

spec

Optimised Suspension

The new damper pad uses a bespoke butyl rubber compound to keep the system critically damped. Combined with an expertly tensioned tie-wire, the cartridge remains ultra-stable even during the loudest and most complex passages.

spec

Neodymium Magnet

A very light and powerful neodymium magnet is clamped between two pole shoes creating a perfectly uniform magnetic field gap, within which the cross armature is suspended. This gives Ethos its typically flat and extended frequency response.

spec

Aluminium Body Shell

The body is precision-milled from a low density, rigid, aircraft grade aluminium which helps to maintain a low effective mass and enables it to dissipate unwanted resonances into the tonearm where they are effectively ‘grounded’.

“…as a long-term vinyl partner it is extremely adept and should be on any audition shortlist at the price.”
Hi-Fi Choice, 5 Stars, Recommended Award

“It sounds like the here and now, clear and balanced and full of beauty. If you haven’t considered a Goldring cartridge in a long time, you need to hear the Ethos.”
Part-Time Audiophile

“The Ethos is a serious performer…It has the potential to unseat some of the more revered cartridges and give them a real run for their money.”
The Ear, Best Buy Award

“I’m deeply impressed by the Goldring Ethos.”
Hi-Fi +

“Goldring’s Ethos is a moving coil cartridge unlike most else. It offers moving coil clarity and stage depth but has a lullingly smooth sound, as we know it from vinyl days of yore. A good performer all-round, with fine tracking, it’s an alternative to the more challenging sound of today’s current crop and worth considering. Outstanding – amongst the best.”
Hi-Fi World, 5 Globes

“When you buy the Ethos, you’re given a promise. A promise that your hi-fi life will improve slowly and steadily over time. The Ethos is for the long haul. Rejoice in the aural gains that you will hear, immediately. Then prepare yourself for new joys to come as a host of information is fed to you over a long period of time. The Ethos? It’s the gentleman’s gentleman of cartridges.”
The Audiophile Man, 9/10, Deeply Groovy award

Wonderful cartridge
Having lived with the Ethos fir a few months now, installed on a new Rega P8, I have no hesitation in recommending it. Tons of detail but without being overly analytical, beautiful neutral tone, no tracking problems whatsoever and virtually no distortion. Great for all types of music but vocals in particular are astonishingly life-like

wunderbare Wiedergabequalität

Over the last few years, I’ve always wondered about the quality of my Benz ACE L. So it showed me every fine change in my playback chain – in the positive as well as in the negative. I have been building my own speakers for almost 4o years and therefore need first-class equipment for the development. At the end of 2017, I allowed myself an Emitter II and an ASR phono stage, which is now battery operated. My turntable I built myself from Thorens components. The one or the other will now certainly nose out, but … with this Thorens … he got a 12 inch tonearm … the subchassis alone weighs a good 13 kg … its center of gravity, the center of the spring triangle and the bearing plate even “are” vertically exactly at this SAME point.

This results in a uniquely soft suspension or decoupling. Enough of the preface.

As far as pickups are concerned, a lot has changed in recent years. If you believe the trade press, the quality of new systems is significantly above average in terms of price. I have read about the Transrotor Figaro reports. Also from Linn Krystal you hear only good. Both are made of gold ring. Interesting (!) I thought.

At the end of 2018 Goldring presented its own MC system called Ethos. Significantly cheaper than the aforementioned … therefore worse?

I could not imagine that and so I bought it “good luck”.

The first hour of listening was awful – but it’s normal. It got better and better.

After 7 hours, it was comparable to my Benz Micro ACE. The Benz was even better in terms of space, but the timbres … middle … wooden in particular, were already more authentic with the ethos. I could keep listening to how things got better (and still will).

It now has a good 30 hours of groove time. It sounds gigantic!

No, it does not sound natural! It reproduces. And in such a high quality that I mean mine

Venyl must hear completely new * happy *.

This – for me a main reason of my joy – sounds soft! S-lutes now come over without a trace of hissing – as if sung from one mouth – as authentically as I could not hear them yet. Especially in the middle, I hear information that was previously hidden from me. Background voices are more clearly differentiated. Finest bells sound authentic, with correct reverberation in the room. Voices, from soft and full-bodied to clear and almost “bird-chirping”.

How many times have I thought it is the end of the possible. More often, I was wrong about this.

However, that the ethos (after only 30 hours) is already far above my expectations shows me clearly that I can rely on my feeling (the best gold ring you can buy good luck).

The same feeling now tells me that I no longer need to look for other pickups.

I reached the summit.
