The M400 uses a high performance DAC AK4499 chip. This is currently the best performance conversion chip built by AKM, it allows the M400 to reach an impressive SNR of 131dB with a THD+N of -124dB. .
Thanks to this conversion chip, the M400 supports high sampling rates and lets you enjoy the most precise reproduction possible for your very high resolution audio files. The M400 is able to play PCM files up to 32bit 768kHz and Native DSD up to DSD512.
Support MQA
MQA for Master Quality Authenticated is an award-winning British technology for restoring the sound of the original recording. The MQA Master file is authenticated by the artists, producers or rights holders. These files are small enough to be streamed or downloaded.
The M500 includes an MQA decoder to play these files in order to provide the best possible audio quality.
MQA decoding is only available via the USB input.

We have another “instrument grade” DAC here from SMSL in the form of M400. Performance is beyond question, landing at the top of the class.
Complete connectivity
On the connection side, the SMSL M400 is extremely well equipped, with an optical SPDIF input, a coaxial SPDIF input, a USB-B input working with an excellent XMOS U216 interface, an I2S input via HDMI respecting the LVDS standard.
The M400 can also receive bluetooth audio streams and supports the best audio protocols available today : UAT, LDAC, apt-X HD, SBC, AAC, for wireless transmission up to 192kHz – 24bit.
The device has a balanced stereo output on 3-pole XLR connectors as well as a single-ended stereo output on RCA connectors.
The XLR and RCA outputs are active simultaneously.
USB interfae XMOS XU216
The USB input of the M500 is associated with an XMOS XU216 32bit XMOS interface, with custom driver. This ensures rich and transparent playback while supporting high sampling rates.
Horloges Accusilicon
The digital stage of the M400 uses ultra high precision and ultra low noise Accusilicon clocks to provide the best audio performance.
These crystal oscillators with extremely low phase noise (<90dBc @ 10Hz) are usually intended for professional recording devices. They propose a singularly low jitter rate measured at <2ps on the 10Hz-1MHz band and <0.08ps on the 12-80MHz band.

Screen & Housing
The SMSL M500 is equipped with a beautiful bright display on the front panel, allowing it to display all the information about the current playback. This includes the volume level, active input, flow and file type, as well as the sampling rate of the read file. This screen is protected by a tempered glass pane.
The components are hidden under a beautiful and robust CNC machined anodized Aluminium housing.
The unit also comes with an IR remote control for easy remote control.
